Garstick hired a young trumpet player in 1959, the new WGH band director Robert Fleming, who remained actively involved with the Packard Concert Band for the next 45 years, longer than any other musical performance organization in Mr. Fleming's entire career.

Below: The BIG SNOW before the Massillon game, Oct. 26, 1962. Please read the full account of this day under "Memories and Short Stories" page, titled "Big Show -- BIGGER SNOW! What to do??" by Rick Bartunek. Next nine photos below courtesy of Rick Bartunek WGH '64.
Above: On the afternoon of the big game between the Panthers and arch-rivals Massillon Tigers, Friday, October 26, 1962, Mollenkopf Stadium field was covered under a six-inch blanket of freshly fallen snow. With the Massillon game that night, and especially since Warren was undefeated, the team faced forfeiting the game. In addition, Mr. Fleming and Mr. Foster had planned a spectacular marching band halftime show that also faced cancellation. But the Harding students did not let that happen. Since a snow plow could rip up the field, that idea was out. So, they came up with a plan. Photo courtesy of Rick Bartunek WGH '64.
Above: A DAUNTING TASK. According to Rick Bartunek, who was a junior at Harding that day, a call went out over the school PA system for student volunteers to report to the field to help clear the snow, so that the team could play and the band could perform. Above, the first students arrive in coats and gloves to begin rolling the snow into large snowballs and placing them against the stadium wall. Note the many snowballs above.
Above: As a snow plow safely clears the track around the field's perimeter, WGH staff and Warren citizens arrive to assist the students in rolling large snowballs off the field. Note that the stadium seating has been partially cleared off. More students came to help throughout the school day.
Above: In addition, the snowstorm had blown inside the "covered" Band Shell!
Above: "Oh, no! Not the Band Shell too!" Despite its roof, the interior of the newly-constructed shell was covered in deep snow as well! Two students take a break before commencing the tiring task of clearing off all those seats and stairs.
Above: The show must go on! And...it did!
Above: Not only were the Massillon Tigers and Harding Panthers arch-rivals in football, they were also arch rivals with the bands. Massillon had a great band, but the Fleming-Foster team was determined to show them what the Panther Band could do, with a remarkable and memorable halftime performance that night.
Above: According to Rick Bartunek: "The Panther Band had worked long and hard perfecting a blockbuster halftime show of stunning drill work and powerhouse tunes, culminating in a magnificent majorette dance-medley, based on the jazzy Broadway music of Richard Rodgers’ 'Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.' Complete with a row of lighted New York-style street lamps, a gleaming pair of timpani centered at the 50, and our talented, beautifully-costumed dance line, this epic feature number – very similar to 'West Side Story' with its changing tempos and styles – brought the house down!"
Above: TAKE A BOW! The band concludes to a standing ovation, thanks to the unrelenting effort earlier that day of the Harding student body, staff, and citizens of Warren. Plus, the Panthers won the game!

The First WGH Fleming Legacy Band 1968-69
The last Fleming-trained Marching and Concert Band
with John Kobasiar Jr.
WGH 1968-69 Band, led by Drum Major Joe Petiya and Head Majorette Cindy Baca, was composed of Fleming-trained veterans, since with few exceptions, the seniors, juniors, and sophomores had all performed under Fleming in the 1966 through 1968 bands, and in the nationally televised and widely praised halftime show at the 1967 College All-Star game in Chicago, including the televised '67 Cleveland Browns home opener game. In fall '68, in addition to entertaining half-time performances including a Dixieland Band, the band traveled to Cincinnati for a halftime performance at a televised NFL Bengals game. Under the guidance of Assistant Director John Kobasiar Jr., the concert band shined at state competition, earning the ninth-straight Superior Level One rating for the WGH musicians.

During the spring 1967-68 school year, Mr. Fleming selected the ten young women to carry on his tradition of precision WGH Majorettes. With five returning from the year before (Mary Lou Adams, Cindy Baca, Joyce Ormsby, Betsy Pearce and Colleen Tomlin), their experience carried over to five new members to assure his high level of excellence. Before taking on his new position in August 1968 on the faculty of Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, Mr. Fleming spent hours training the incoming marching band and majorettes during field practice with Mr. Kobasiar, preparing them for Band Night ahead of the arrival of a new director. Mr. Kobasiar would remain with the band for one more year during the transition to assure high standards continued, until the first Fleming-Legacy band director, Rick Bartunek WGH '64, arrived in fall 1970 to see the WGH band successfully through the next decades.

The W. D. Packard Concert Band
Robert Fleming's 45-year Packard Concert Band Connection to the Earliest Warren G. Harding High School Bands
In 1925 when the new high school opened, the WGH Marching Band was formed under directors Charles Corlett and Carl Scheig. Two years later, George Garstick joined on trombone (above front row, third from right). He would graduate WGH '31, attend Curtis Institute of Music, perform principal trombone in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Opera, and was on faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music. In 1954, Garstick was asked to return to Warren to create a concert band that would perform at a new music hall under construction at Packard Park. Garstick agreed and drew musicians from the area to form the Packard Concert Band, which held its first concert at the dedication ceremony of the Packard Music Hall October 1955. In 1959, Garstick, as Band Manager, Music Consultant, and trombonist, hired a talented young trumpet player -- the new WGH band director, Robert Fleming. Garstick would feature Fleming in a trumpet trio at Sunday afternoon concerts, invited Fleming's WGH students to perform on the music hall stage, and introduced him to the areas's finest musicians as members of the Packard Band. Dana School of Music faculty member Donald Byo, a bassoonist for the Packard Band since 1957, would be the one to recommend Fleming for the faculty position of Director of Bands at Youngstown State University in 1968. Garstick and Fleming's friendship would continue until Garstick's passing in 1985. In 1983, Garstick recommended Fleming as co-conductor of the Packard Band, who went on to direct The Big Band Sound of Packard, The Packard Jazz Quintet and the Packard Dixieland Band. Fleming retired from the Packard Band in 2004 after 45 years, the longest association with a musical performance organization in his entire career.

Above: Six members are WGH Band grads -- Director Dan Carioti WGH '80; next to him, Shawn Marko '88 on bass; Front row third from right: Rich Rollo WGH ‘75 on sax; to his right is Rick Bartunek WGH '64 and Jim Metzendorf WGH '93. On trombone far right is Bill Forrester WGH ‘71.
From Rick Bartunek: Above is a spectacular video of the Big Band Sound from a few years ago. I hope you enjoy it and marvel at the quality of this hometown ensemble. Nearly every member is an outstanding current or former high school band director in their own right. Truly a DREAM TEAM! And it’s truly the chance of a lifetime to play in a group of this caliber!
Six are WGH GRADS. On baritone sax is Reid Young, current Harding band director. The sensational trumpet soloist throughout the video is Russ McQuaide, current Superintendent of the Mathews Schools. And Dan Carioti and Rich Rollo's ’s jazz solo prowess is unmistakable.
This performance is clearly a reflection of Bob Fleming’s enduring musicianship and influence on ALL of these dedicated artists, most of them former students of his!

Five Lifelong Friends: These three young men, all WGH '64 band members, including John Bishop and Bob Ciulei, formed a rock 'n roll band in high school called the "Seniors Five." The band, with all of its original members, still performs to this day -- 60 years later! It continues to be known as the "Seniors Five," but for a somewhat different reason!

The WGH Class of '64 debuted new black and white uniforms for the First Band Night in the fall of 1963. Their band was also the first to sit in the newly constructed band shell in 1962 , and saw the first WGH Fleming drum major Greg Lowry-- quite exciting times to be in the WGH marching band!
